Iceland Herd Sires used in 2007 via AI (artificial insemination)
November 24th 2007 we LAI-ed (Laparoscopic Artificial Insemination) 32 ewes to the 14 sires below using the semen we imported from Iceland. This breeding will expand the genetics of our flock greatly. Spring will bring the exciting results. We are excited as many of these rams carry color. All of the ewes we used are colored so all of the lambs will carry color even if the lambs are born white. Some of these genetics are not yet in the USA. We are fortunate to be able to get semen from some of the finest rams in Iceland from Southram a cooperative Farmer/Agricultural ram AI collection Station. www.bssl.is

Áll 00-868 from Hestur Experimental farm, Borgarfjarðarsveit, Borgarfjarðarsýsla.
Weight and measures 2001: 96 - 108 - 25,0 - 119 Please note Points 2001: 8 - 8,5 - 9 - 8,5 - 9 - 18 - 7,5 - 8 - 8,5 = 85 points Ultrasound 2001: Eye muscle thickness 36 mm, back fat thickness 5 mm, muscle shape 4. (S) Description: White, horned. Beautiful head and very well curved horns. Round and muscular shoulders, broad chest and very good conformation. Strong back and extremely muscular. Very well muscled loins. Great and muscularly round shaped gigots. Straight feets. Overall harmony and total conformation superior. Wool EE: Tan on feets and neck. A little bit of tan fibers in the fleece but no black hairs. Wool quantity little below average, rather fine thog but a bit of coarse fibers around the tail. Results: Áll was progeny tested at Hestur Experimental Farm in 2001. His progenies were very muscular and lean. Dressing weight little below average compared to other sires in the test. Average gigot score was 4,06 which was amongst the highest (points 1-5). Carcass grading was above average and the progenies were very lean. Back muscle thickness was significantly above average and back fat thickness below average. Áll is without any doubt carrying great meat qualities and leanness on to his progenies. Neck is short and thick, shoulders are broad and very muscular. Chest is wide, rounded and conformation good. Askur got strong back with thik and well shaped eye muscle. Loins are broad and well muscled. Gigots are especially thick and well shaped. Feets are straight and well placed. Askur is very muscular allover with dashing appearance. He´s also very calm and easy to handle. Wool EE: Light tan on head and feets, tan fibers here and there in the fleece especially backwards. No black hairs. Wool quantity little below average, thog rather curly but a bit coarse. Short on back. Results: Askur has been an AI sire for last two years resulting in carrying on great conformation and carcass grading. Last year (2000) he had the highest average carcass grading of all AI sires in Iceland. His progenies tend to be to fat and he is therefore only suitable in flocks that are rather lean.
Askur´s daughter are young but sheep records show that they are prolific. His mother, Hefring 94-400, has always had twins except as a yearling. She´s often been AI´d and seven of her eight sons have been kept for breeding. She´s got 9,0 for milking abilities. Color inheritance: Askur is homozygous white. Bessi 99-851 from Háholt farm, Gnúpverjahreppur, Árnessýsla.
Weight and measures 2000: 73 - 102 - 23 - 120 Please note Points 2000: 8 - 8 - 9 - 8,5 - 9 - 17,5 - 8 - 8 - 8 = 84,0 points Ultrasound 2000: Eye muscle thickness 33 mm, back fat thickness 3 mm, eye muscle shape 4 (H) Description: Bessi is white, horned with good curving. The head is not broad. Shoulders are broad with good muscling. The chest is wide and conformation excellent. The back is muscled and broad. Loins are very muscular and gigots are excellently shaped, the muscle thick and deep. Feets are strong and well placed. Bessi has average body length and is a vigorous looking sire. Wool EE: Tan on feets, black stripes in horns. No tan or black fibers in the fleece. Average quantity, fine thog, even and curled but a bit shorter on back. The fleece is very white and lustrous. Results: Bessi was absolutely the best lamb sire evaluated in South Iceland in the autumn 1999. Bessi was progeny tested by SOUTHRAM in 2000 and he was superior compared to the other sires in the test. In male lamb comparison he scored 115 points for meat qualities, 131 points for lambs or 122 points in total score. He carries on weight, excellent carcass grading and leanness. Bessi confirmed his excellent qualities in lamb evaluations this autumn by carrying on superb eye muscle thickness and muscle shape, leanness, great gigot muscling and excellent carcass grading.
Bessi´s mother, 93-340 from
Steinsholt farm, had 7,1 for milking abilities, and produced singles
twice and twice twins after she was bought to Háholt farm. Bessi is son
of Moli 93-986 which was and is one of Iceland´s top breeding AI sires. |

Dalur 97-838 from Heydalsá farm (B.G.), Kirkjubólshreppur, Strandasýsla (bought from Gröf farm in Broddaneshreppur)

(S) Description: Dalur white, polled with broad and good looking head. The neck is short and broad, shoulders broad and muscled. The chest is average and conformation very good. The back is broad, flat and well shaped and muscled. The loins are not long but broad and very muscular. Gigots are well shaped and thick. Feets are straight and well placed. Dalur is not longbodied but with good overall harmony. Dalur is vigorously looking and exceptionally calm and easy. Wool EE: Completely white with no tan fibers, very woollish with very thick thel and great fleece. Lustrous. Medium coarse thog and even allover the fleece. No black fibers. Results: Dalur was progeny tested at Gröf farm in 1998; eye muscle thickness 22,7 mm (S), back fat 2,9 mm, thighs 16,0 points, meat qualities 6,88 points, leanness 5,88 points and dressing weight 17,89 kg. Dalur has proven himself as an excellent meat qualities carrier and is one of the best polled AI sire ever known. Dalur is exceptionally calm and relaxed as his progenies seem to inherit.

(H) Description: White, horned. Very vigorous head and good horn curving. Broad neck, coarse shoulders but muscular, wide chest and great conformation. Strong back and broad and muscular loins. Gigots are muscled and well shaped. Strong feets. Longbodied and powerful ram. Wool EE: Light tan on neck and feets with a moorit spot on rear leg. Very few tan fibers in fleece but no black hairs. Great wool quantity, medium fine thog and a beautyful and evenly distributed fiberlength allover the fleece. Results: Fengur was progeny tested (along with 11 other rams) at Kirkjubæjarklaustur farm in 2001 where he came out superior to all other rams in the test. His progenies have great conformation, thick eye muscle (25,4 mm, test average 24,5 mm), great gigots, varying wool qualities. For carcass grading he scored 140 with a good leanness to.

Flotti 98-850 from Grímsstaðir farm, V-Landeyjar, Rangárvallasýsla.

(H) Description: Flotti is white and horned, very good looking with well curved horns. The neck is extremely broad and well connected to broad and muscled shoulders. Great conformation and wide chest. Excellent back muscling. Great muscling on loins. Powerful gigots with thick, rounded and deep muscle. Very strong feets and well placed. Flotti is exceptionally good looking sire. Wool EE: "Light tan on head and tail with tan fibers scattered around the fleece. One black spot on back. Average quantity, rather little thel, the thog short on back but even elsewhere in the fleece and nicely curved allover." Results: Flotti was champion sire of Rangárvallasýsla 1999. He was progeny tested at Grímsstaðir Farm in 1999 scoring 149 points for meat qualities, 154 points for lambs and 152 points in total score. He was absolutely superior compared to the other rams in the test:
Flotti carries on great meat classification and gigots. Great number of Flotti´s progenies were evaluated this autumn resulting in great eye muscle thickness with good shape. On the other hand gigot muscling is just above average. Flotti´s progenies are very dashing and vigorously looking and he´s got good breeding indexes (BLUP) for both carcass and fat grading.

(H) Description: White, polled. Very broad and vigorous head. Short and thick neck excellently connected to broad and muscular shoulders. Chest is wide and conformation good. Back is broad and rounded. Loins broad and very well muscled. Rounded and well shaped gigot muscle with great muscling. Feets are straight. Glær is fresh looking, powerful ram with a good overall harmony. Wool EE: White with no tan fibers. Great wool, lustrous and quantity well above average. Thog a bit coarse and little shorter on back. Good and soft thel. Results: Glær isn´t progeny tested but has been noticed for great offspring carcass grading and good performance of his sons. Glær has great breeding index for carcass grading (127) which is in good combination with carcass grading of his offsprings.
Glær´s daughters are promising. His mother was very prolific, produced twins as a yearling and after that always twins except once triplets with 5,2 for milking abilities. Hængur 98-848 from Nýpugarðar farm, Mýrar, A-Skaftafellssýsla.

(H) Description: Hængur is white, horned, tan on head and feets. Head is vigorous. Shoulders a bit coarse but very muscular. Chest is extremely wide and conformation great. Back is strong, broad and muscular. Loins are broad and muscled. Gigots are well shaped, the muscle big and rounded. Strong and straight feets. Hængur is extremely muscular and longbodied sire. Wool EE: Tan on head and feets with tan fibers scattered around the fleece. All colurs can be expected on Hængur´s progenies including spotted. Average quantity, rather shortwoolled with little thel on back. The thog rather fine but short. No black fibers were found. Results: Hængur was judged champion sire of A-Skaftafellssýsla in 1999 and awarded as such. He was progeny tested at Nýpugarðar farm that autumn with following result: 142 points for meat qualities, 94 points for lambs and 118 points total score. Hængur has produced lot of great lambs this year with good eye muscle thickness. He carries on leannes as other son´s of Garpur 92-808. Carcass grading is great as well as his breeding index for meat qualities (130).
Hængur hasn´t proven himself according to daughters abilities and prolificacy but his mother always had twins except her yearling year when she had a single. Color inheritance: Hængur is heterozygous white, not carrying moorit or spotted. Scrapie resistance genotype: In testing. |

Hörvi 99-856 from Melar I farm, Árneshreppur, Strandasýsla

(S) Description: Hörvi is white, polled, with good looking head, short and broad neck which connects excellently to his body. Shoulders are broad and muscular and conformation good. Back is broad, flat and muscled, loins are well shaped and muscular, gigots thick with well shaped muscles. Strong feets and straight. Average body length. Wool EE: White with no tan fibers, woollish, coarse thog but lots of thel. No black hairs. Results: Hörvi was progeny tested in 2000 at Melar 1 farm with another 12 rams. He scored 94 for meat qualities and 105 for ultrasound. His offspring carcass grading was very good, meaty lambs and lean, average dressing weight 17,7 kg. In 2001 very good progenies of Hörvi were evaluated, main characteristics tended to be good overall conformation and great wool.

(H) Description: Moorit mouflon, horned. Powerful head with good horn curving. Shoulders a bit coarse but chest is wide and conformation good. Back is broad, strong and muscular. Good loin muscling. Gigots above average and straight and strong feets. Good looking ram. Wool EE: Little bit greyish in the fleece and starting to lighten. Medium wool quantity, medium thog and good thel, fine and soft. Woollish. Results: Kani was progeny tested at hamar farm in 2000. His result was well over average, scoring 116 for ultrasound scanning and 111 for carcass grading. His progenies were lean with good conformation though dressing weight was below average in the test. Kani´s progenies have very good carcass grading.
No daughters of kani are on records yet but his mother is prolific, always had twins except twice, as a yearling and once more since. She´s got 6,8 for milking abilities. Ljómi 98-865 from Brautartunga farm, Árborg, Árnessýsla. Weight and measures 1999: 75 - 101 - 25,0 - 114 Please note Points 1999: 8 - 8 - 8 - 9 - 8,5 - 17 - 8 - 8 - 8,5 = 83,0 points Ultrasound 1999: Eye muscle thickness 40 mm, back fat thickness 5 mm, eye muscle shape 4. (H) Description: White and horned. Good looking head with rather coarse and narrowly curved horns. Thick and short neck, good shoulder muscling, rather narrow chest but conformation above average. Adequately muscled back and good loin muscling. Great gigots, straight and well placed feets. Longbodied ram with good conformation. Wool EE: Light tan on feets with some tan fibers in the fleece. Small black spots in face but no black hairs in the fleece. Thog rather short and a bit thin thel, wool quantity below average. Results: Ljómi was progeny tested along with 5 other superb rams from Árnessýsla at Háholt farm in 2001. He resulted best with progenies below average in dressing weight but great conformation, thick eye muscle and excellent gigot muscling. Ultrasound scanning score was 137 for felmale lambs and 132 for ram lambs. For carcass grading he scored 118. Leanness was much better than other rams in the test. At Brautartunga farm Ljómi´s ofsprings have been heavy with good conformation as well as great carcass grading.
First indications of Ljómi´s daughters are positive regarding prolificacy and milking abilities. Ljómi´s mother is prolific, produced single as yearling and twins after that except triplets last spring. She has 9,1 for milking abilities which is superb. Ljóri 95-828 from Þóroddsstaðir farm, Hrútafjörður, V-Húnavatnssýsla
Weight and measures 1996: 89 - 101 - 25 - 118 Please note Points 1996: 8 - 8,5 - 7,5 - 9 - 8,5 - 17,5 - 8 - 8 - 8 = 82,5 points Ultrasound 1995: Eye muscle thickness 26 mm, back fat thickness 2 mm. (S) Description: Ljóri is white and horned. Head is hard looking, broad neck and shoulders. Average conformation. Back is muscular and loins and gigots well muscled. Feets are straight and well placed. Ljóri is a muscular ram with hard temperament and great meat qualities. Wool EE: Tan on feets and tan fibers can be found in the fleece. Small black spot on neck but no black hairs in the fleece. Medium wool quantity, even distribution allover and medium thog fineness. Results: Ljóri has been progeny tested several times, first at Þóroddsstaðir farm in 1996. There he got great results, scored 132 (average=100). His progenies had thickest eye muscle, most leanness, average gigots and very good wool. They also performed very well in carcass grading. Ljóri was also progeny tested in 1997 and 1998 confirming his progenies excellent meat qualities. It´s not adviced to use Ljóri except where you get a good dressing weight because else they tend not to be mature enough. He carries on great leanness as can be seen on his fat grading index (137). He fit´s excellently in flocks where fat is a problem
Ljóri´s daughters are prolific and seem to be heavy milkers as well. Records from spring 2001 show excellent prolificacy of Ljóri´s daughters which have not been calculated into indexes. Color inheritance: Ljóri is homozygous white. Scrapie resistance genotype: Neutral. |

(S) Description: Sekkur is white, coarse horned with vigorous head. Neck is short and thick, shoulders a bit coarse but wide chest and excellent conformation. Back is broad, rounded and very well muscled. Loins are muscular and gigots very good. Feets are straight and well placed. Sekkur has good harmony and bodylength, strong conformation and dashing look. Wool EE: Tan on head and feets with tan fibers on loins. No black hairs. Thog is short in back and coarse on sides. Results: Sekkur was progeny tested at Hestur Experimental farm in 1998 with magnificent performance. Eye muscle thickness was well over 1 mm above average, conformation and gigot scoring were also well over average. Sekkur´s progenies are usually shortlegged with great conformation and gigot muscling. Eye muscle is also very well shaped but he scored 4 when average was 3,5. Muscle shape score is 1-5 where 5 is best. Sekkur has noticeably good breeding index for fat grading, 112. Great number of Sekkur´s progenies were evaluated this autumn confirming that Sekkur carries on very thick and well shaped eye muscle. Carcass grading has been very good, both regarding meat and fat. Sekkur is absolutely on of the best breeding sires from Hestur Experimental farm.
Sekkur´s daughters at Hestur Experimental farm have average prolificacy but are good milkers. Spring records 2001 show average daughter prolificacy. Color inheritance: Sekkur is heterozygous white, but doesn´t carry moorit or spotted. Scrapie resistance genotype: Neutral. |

Wool EE: Light tan on head and very few tan fibers in the fleece. Black spots in the fleece. Wool quantity reaches medium, thog both fine and coarse and not long.
